Werewolf Wednesday: Tunes to wolf out to
As I work on my own interminable werewolf work-in-progress, I think often of what would be on its official soundtrack. This is one of those tricks authors use to avoid writing. We call it brainstorming, or world-building, or visualizing. But it’s not.

My two favorites are “Where the Wolf Bane Blooms” by The Nomads and “Werewolves” by Jody Cooper. The former’s stylistically a better fit for your list, but here’s a link to the latter anyway.

Cool, I will check that out. I’m going to have to apologize for not knowing about the vast number of werewolf tunes apparently out there, despite looking for them and asking for recommendations 😛

“Werewolf Songs – Music Inspired by Swedish Folklore” is a recently released record with werewolf music. The record contains 11 contributions from various artists, mostly of the folk genre, and is intended as the soundtrack for a re-relase of Swedish ethnologist Ella Odstedt’s 1943 book about Werewolf lore in Sweden. This looks like a very interesting collection of music, though I am not familiar with any of the bands. I’d be very interested in reading the companion book, since I don’t know much about Swedish werewolf folklore — just some that was touched on in Sabine Baring-Gould’s The Book of Werewolves.

Malört Förlag just released an entire record full of werewolf music: “Werewolf Songs – Music Inspired by Swedish Folklore”. It’s mostly folky stuff, and the record is intended as a soundtrack to a re-release of a 1943 book about werewolf lore in Sweden.

I thought it was pretty funky too. When I asked people for suggestions, more than a few Manitobans referred to this song as “Werewolves of Lundar.” I think there’s a story title there.

My vote is for Michael Hurley’s “Werewolf” which by the way is the *original* version that both the Barry Dransfield and Cat Power versions are based upon. No, it’s not metal nor does it have fancy production values but it’s got soul.

Though I am a big metal fan, I also love folk music, and the way one song can be completely changed by the artist interpreting it.
Soul counts for a lot.
